A Chinese delegation led by Prof. Yuko Abe of the Centre for Studies of Ethnic Groups in North West China of Lanzhou University, paid a visit to the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) on Wednesday 14th February, 2024. The Center is the ethnological base of education and scientific studies which offers an undergraduate program, MA program, PhD program and a postdoctoral research station on ethnological studies.

The purpose of their visit was to establish academic and research collaboration with SUZA. As the Center is in the process of restructuring to expand its research interests to ethnological research targets outside of China, including Africa and Europe, the two institutions agreed to extend research areas in Tanzania that will pursue academic exchanges of staff and students. The delegation formed in interest to  collaborate in Swahili language, history and anthropology studies.

Prof. Moh’d Makame Haji, the Vice Chancellor of the State University of Zanzibar on his side informed the delegation that Zanzibar treasures the long-term relationship with China and through this relationship SUZA has established cooperations with Chinese academic institutions and still needs to have more for the sake of promoting research and academic programmes at international level.
