Announcement for one MSc. Scholarship at the State University of Zanzibar
Innovative Free-Energy Technologies for Reducing Postharvest Losses of Fruits and Vegetables in Zanzibar (FFV) is a two-years collaborative research project between the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) and Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA). The objective of this project is to reduce postharvest losses of fruits and vegetables by using free-energy technologies for sustainable agriculture and livelihood of small-scale farmers and traders. The research is expected to assess the current postharvest losses of fresh fruits and vegetables along the produce value chain, and to develop free energy cold storage facilities for small- scale farmers and traders of fruit and vegetables in Zanzibar. Furthermore, it is expected to build capacity to small holder farmers on good farming, harvesting, pre-processing, storage and handling practices of fresh fruits and vegetables. The successful candidate ́s tasks will include determination of the nutritious values of vegetable and fruits in the supply chain of the products. But also, the collection and analysis of large data sets of postharvest losses of fruits and vegetables in Zanzibar.
This project is funded by Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH). The research is among the selected project for fund as it is related to the unique challenges within the Zanzibar communities, which differ from the rest of the Tanzanian community as identified by development agenda of Zanzibar Development Vision 2020.
The State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) is the hosting institution and leader of this project. To initiate the project processes, we are announcing the MSc. (1 position) scholarship at SUZA. Candidates with background in Chemistry and Biology are preferred. The scholarship is open to continuing Master of Science candidates in Chemistry or Environmental Sciences at the State University of Zanzibar. Successful applicant will be expected to start his/her research immediately after receiving the scholarship offer.
Applicants must be admitted at the State University of Zanzibar for MSc. in Chemistry or Environmental Sciences Program.
- S(he) should be employee of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar.
- S(he) should submit his/her academic certificates.
- Motivational letter (Maximum 2 pages)
- A maximum of 2-page of Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Coursework result slip or Progressive report signed by Director of Graduate Studies, Research and Consultancy (DGSRC)
- Good command of English (written and oral)
- Willingness to work in a multi-disciplinary and multicultural team work.
- Two colored pasport size.
Scholarship duration and coverage:
The MSc. scholarship will be for one year. The MSc. student will receive a full scholarship over this time frame. The full scholarship covers the University fees and direct student costs (i.e. a stipend, and research costs, publications, and dissertation production costs). The direct student costs are determined by the project management.

Application Deadline: October 19th, 2018 at Noon (12:00 hours, East African Time).
The evaluation of applications will be done by a committee composed by members from Directorate of Graduate Studies, Research and Consultancy and FFV Project. Based on the submitted documentation, the committee will shortlist minimum two applicants who will be further assessed for possible scholarship offer.
Only shortlisted applicants will be contacted for interview before 25th October 2018
