SUZA VISITS US EMBASSY
The State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) paid a courtesy visit to The US Embassy office in Dar es Salaam on the 4th January 2012. The purpose of the visit was aimed at recognizing the sustained partnership between the embassy and SUZA in the past ten years.

As such, the new SUZA Vice Chancellor also took the opportunity to introduce himself to the ambassador and also presented the revised vision of The State University of Zanzibar (SUZA). The US ambassador to Tanzania, H.E. Alfonso E. Lenhardt, articulated the importance of SUZA in Zanzibar towards development of the country and building information-based society. The embassy is one of the ten development partners that were recently awarded by SUZA during its 7th Graduation Ceremony for sustaining partnership with SUZA in the past ten years. The Vice Chancellor, also took the opportunity to hand over the award to the ambassador during the visit.

In presenting the new revised vision of The State University of Zanzibar (SUZA), Prof. Rai said that SUZA aims to be the best university in the region that offers quality and broadly relevant programs to build knowledge based society that can tackle the new challenges in the 21st century.

SUZA is currently creating strategies through which the development of the university capacity will be given high priority. Those strategies have been going hand in hand with restructuring academic units and programs for the first phase. According to the Vice Chancellor, the development of the university will also be made through establishment of new schools. These include School of Tourism and Hotel Management, School of Agriculture and School of Business, School of Computing, Communication and Media.

In his remarks, The US Ambassador took the opportunity to appreciate the existing government of unity in Zanzibar especially during the recent tragedy of the Spice Islander. He confessed that the implementation of that unity has become the basis of peace and stability for Zanzibar development. The Ambassador also reaffirmed the U.S.' continued commitment as a strong partner in the Development of Zanzibar and Tanzania as a whole.

U.S Embassy has been partnering with SUZA in implementing various activities including supporting the establishment of an American Corner, and supporting the Swahili Flagship Program at SUZA which is the US government program through the American Council for International Education. The American Corner at SUZA has been providing up-to-date information to students and residents on America affairs. The corner also organizes numerous events for students and public regarding socio-economic issues of the country, and provides free Internet access.
