The Library of the State University of Zanzibar was first established in 1979 as the library of the Institute of Kiswahili and Foreign Languages (IKFL). Following the establishment of the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) under the Act No. 8 of 1999 of the Zanzibar House of Representatives and officially commenced to operate in 2002, the former IKFL library was phased out and became the State University of Zanzibar Library (SUZA Library).

Since then the SUZA library has been expanded and reorganized to fit in with the demand of the various academic programmes offered and undertaken by the University at all levels and increase in students population.
Currently, the Library is widened and spread its branches in Schools and Institute campuses as follows: the main library (Tunguu main campus), School of Kiswahili and Foreign Languages – SKFL (Nkrumah campus), School of Health and Medical Sciences (Mbweni campus), School of Business (Chwaka campus), Institute of Tourism (Maruhubi campus) and in Pemba Island there is Benjamin William Mkapa library which is located at Mchangamdogo in Wete District. The new main Library which is the largest academic Library in Zanzibar has a capacity to accommodate over 23,000 volumes of printed books and serves more than 4,700 SUZA Community members.
