The University profile

Founded in 1999 and started its academic activities in 2001, the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) has quickly placed itself among the icons of academic quality and excellence in the Eastern Africa region. As a public university, it focuses on delivering relevant education targeted at speeding up social changes. In a short period of time, SUZA has developed into one of the most prominent universities in Tanzania and aspires to be the University of Choice in Eastern African region.

On 19th October, 2016 His Excellency Dr. Ali Mohamed Shein, the President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council has assented Act No. 7 of 2016 enacted by the Zanzibar House of Representatives to amend the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) Act No. 9 of 1999 as amended by Act No. 11 of 2009. Following this important step forward, SUZA has now been expanded through merging with the Zanzibar Institute of Financial Administration (ZIFA) and College of Health Sciences (CHS) which will now with immediate effect turn into School of Business and School of Health and Medical Sciences respectively while the Zanzibar Institute of Tourism Development (ZIToD) turns into the Institute of Tourism, all three under SUZA

Currently, SUZA consists of seven campuses that are found at equally beautiful but different locations within Zanzibar and made up of School of Kiswahili and Foreign Languages (SKFL), School of Continuing and Professional Education (SCOPE), School of Education (SoE), School of Natural and Social Sciences (SNSS). Others are School of Health and Medical Sciences (SHMS) and School of Business (SBS). SUZA has a number of Centres, these include Centre for Graduate Studies and Research (CGSR) which coordinates graduate studies and research, Centre for Digital Learning (CDL) which encompasses an educational digital television. There are also two research Centres, namely Global Centre for Kiswahili Advancement (GCKA), Tropical Research Centre for Oceanography, Environment and Natural Resources (TROCEN). Apart from these Centres, SUZA offers tourism studies under its Institute of Tourism.
